Sonam Wangchuk: Engineer, Innovator and Education Reformer

Early Life

Sonam Wangchuk was born on 1 September 1966 in Alchi village, Ladakh (then part of Jammu & Kashmir, now in the Union Territory of Ladakh). He is an engineer, environmentalist, educator, and social innovator known for developing practical solutions for the Himalayan region.

Educational Reforms

In 1988, he co-founded the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an organization dedicated to improving education in Ladakh. SECMOL promotes hands-on learning, practical skills, and environmentally sustainable living.

Operation New Hope

In 1994, Wangchuk helped launch Operation New Hope, a partnership between local communities, schools, and the government to improve the quality of government education in Ladakh. The initiative focused on teacher training, curriculum improvements, and community participation.

Major Innovations

1. Ice Stupa

His best-known innovation is the Ice Stupa, an artificial glacier that stores unused winter water in the form of cone-shaped ice structures.

Purpose:

• Stores water during winter.
• Releases water gradually in spring.
• Helps farmers during the dry sowing season.
• Supports agriculture in high-altitude regions affected by climate change.

The Ice Stupa has received international recognition and has inspired similar projects in other countries.

2. Solar-Heated Buildings

Wangchuk designed passive solar buildings made from local materials such as rammed earth. These buildings stay warm in extremely cold winters without relying heavily on fossil fuels.

3. Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL)

He co-founded HIAL, an institution that encourages students to solve real-world problems through innovation, sustainability, and practical learning suited to mountain regions.

Connection with 3 Idiots

Many people believe the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the film 3 Idiots was inspired in part by Sonam Wangchuk's life and work, although the film is fictional and Wangchuk has said he is not the character himself.

Current Hunger Strike (July 2026)

As of 20 July 2026, Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike in Delhi to demand greater accountability in India's education system following major examination paper leak controversies. Reports indicate he has said he would consider ending the fast if political leaders formally commit to raising these issues in Parliament. During the protest, he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for medical care.
